Adopt-A-Minefield’s Mine Action Program provides support for mine clearance and survivor assistance activities in six permanent country programs – Afghanistan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Cambodia, Croatia, Mozambique and Vietnam. AAM also provides support to other mine impacted countries through our “Special Projects”. This allows AAM to respond to urgent needs, such as our special appeal for Iraq in 2003, or to support specific interventions that will improve the lives of people in those countries.
Mine Clearance
Mine Clearance activities are funded through the United Nations Development Program and in close cooperation with national mine action centers in support of local and international mine clearance organizations. In the case of Vietnam, where there is no national mine action center currently, AAM supports the activities of the Mines Advisory Group. Mine clearance projects include the clearance of specific minefields or support for a mine clearance team over a two-month period. In either case, all projects are considered high or medium priority by a national mine action authority because they will make people safer and will be used for development once they have been cleared. All mine clearance partners must work to international mine action standards set by the United Nations to ensure the safety of the deminers as well as the community once the site has been cleared.

Survivor Assistance
AAM’s survivor assistance program was launched in September of 2002. This program supports the work of organizations that are providing any number of vital services to landmine survivors in the most mine-impacted countries in the world. AAM Survivor Assistance partners are selected on a competitive basis based on our Survivor Assistance Criteria. Our focus is on ensuring that the largest number of people can receive the highest quality of service possible so that they can become reintegrated into their communities. AAM believes that landmine survivors and all disabled people have a right to the same quality of life that other people have and recognizes that many governments in mine-impacted countries do not have the resources to provide needed services.

AAM accepts grant proposals for its SurvivorAssistance program on a rolling basis. Any organization that is interested in applying should refer to our grant criteria and guidelines before submitting an application. Only organizations that meet the criteria will be considered and those that are considered will be compared with others to determine where the funds available will have the greatest impact. Awards range from $10,000 to $100,000.
