US Campaign to Ban Landmines Takes on Cluster Bombs
The US Campaign to Ban Landmines (USCBL) has officially expanded its mandate to include cluster munitions. As a current chair and member of the USCBL Steering Committee, AAM is working closely with all USCBL members to encourage the US goverment to prohibit the use, production, stockpiling, and transfer of cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians as well as their use in or near populated areas. Global Conference Builds Support for New International Treaty to Ban Cluster Bombs
June 1, 2007 - Delegates from 68 countries and approximately 200 civil society organizations met in Lima, Peru, May 23-25 to discuss crafting a new international treaty on cluster munitions by the end of 2008. The global campaign to ban cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians, coordinated by the Cluster Munitions Coalition (CMC), is similar to movement to address the global landmine issue launched in 1997.
Cluster munitions severely disrupt the lives and livelihoods of 400 million people worldwide. Schoolyards and farmland are littered with unexploded ordinances (UXOs). Contaminated land impedes economic development, restricts access to water and deprives children of safe access to education. This widens the poverty gap and further represses the poorest communities and individuals. Read More >>>
Adopt-A-Minefield, UNA-USA, Becomes the official Chair of the United States Campaign to Ban Landmines!
March 7, 2007 — New York, NY The United Nations Association of the USA's (UNA-USA) program, Adopt-A-Minefield®, became the official chair of the United States Campaign to Ban Landmines. Zach Hudson, program director for UNA-USA's Adopt-A-Minefield Campaign, will represent the organization as its new chair.
The US Campaign to Ban Landmines (USCBL) is a coalition of approximately 500 US-based human rights, faith-based, medical, environmental and other organizations dedicated to a total ban on antipersonnel landmines. It is one of 90 country campaigns that constitute the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Read More >>>
Adopt-A-Minefield Launches Farah Appeal In Honor Of New AAM Youth Ambassador Farah Ahmedi
Adopt-A-Minefield has launched The Farah Appeal, a campaign to raise mine action funds in honor of newly-named AAM Youth Ambassador Farah Ahmedi. Farah, who lost her leg to a landmine ten years ago, recently won ‘The Story of My Life’ competition, sponsored by ABC’s Good Morning America and Simon & Schuster.
After winning the competition, Farah met with First Lady Laura Bush at the White House on May 5th, to discuss her experiences as a landmine survivor. At the White House, Farah was accompanied by AAM Board Chair Ambassador Nancy Rubin and AAM Executive Director Nahela Hadi as well as representatives from Simon and Shuster and “The Story of My Life.” Read More >>>
