Speaker: Jody Sarich, Free the Slaves
Jody Sarich is a Policy and Research Associate with free the Slaves in Washington, D.C. She has twelve years of experience in research and advocacy on the issue of historical and contemporary slavery, as an academic, an educator, a researcher and a legal advocate. Focusing on slavery and servitude in sub-Saharan Africa, she received her M.A. in African History in 1999 from the School of oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London.
She received her J.D., with a concentration in International and Comparative Law, from DePaul University School of Law in 2010. She has representedwomen seeking asylum in the United States under the Convention Against Torture and has served as an expert witness for women who sought asylum in the U.S. after having fled forced marriages in their home countries. At present, Ms. Sarich is completing her Ph.D. thesis, also at SOAS, on historical slavery in South Africa and writing a book, with Kevin Bales, exploring forced marriage worldwide.
